Determining the Shape of a Human Vocal Tract From Pressure Measurements at the Lips

چکیده

In this review paper the sound propagation in a human vocal tract is analyzed. The sound pressure and the volume velocity in the tract are evaluated when a unit-amplitude, monochromatic, sinusoidal volume velocity is sent from the glottis towards the lips. The unique solution to the inverse problem is outlined, where the cross-sectional area of the vocal tract as a function of the distance from the glottis is recovered from the absolute value of the pressure at the lips known at all frequencies. Inverse Scattering to Determine the Shape of a Vocal Tract

The inverse scattering problem is reviewed for determining the cross sectional area of a human vocal tract. Various data sets are examined resulting from a unit-amplitude, monochromatic, sinusoidal volume velocity sent from the glottis towards the lips. In case of nonuniqueness from a given data set, additional information is indicated for the unique recovery. PACS (2003): 02.30.Zz, 43.72.Ct Ma...

Physical modeling of vowel-bilabial plosive sound production

Downstream of the vocal folds, it is often assumed that all the kinetic energy of the glottal jet is dissipated by turbulence. Although this assumption is reasonable for normal voicing, there are many configurations for which a constriction or even an occlusion of the vocal tract occurs and leads to a significant pressure recovery. Such a phenomenon occurs during the production of vowel-bilabia...

Velopharyngeal insufficiency studied using finite-element models of male vocal tract with experimental verification

Finite element (FE) models of acoustic spaces corresponding to the human nasal and vocal tract for vowel /a/ are used for numerical simulations. Simplified FE model of the vocal tract for English vowel was created from geometrical data published in literature and for the Czech vowel by transferring data directly from MRI images. The nasal cavities were added to the models manually according to ...

Acoustical properties of the vocal-tract in trombone performance

The study of the acoustical in uence of the upstream (vocal-tract) airway in wind instrument performance has been a growing subject of interest in musical acoustics. In a recent study performed on trombone players, we observed a noticeable increase of the acoustic pressure near the fundamental frequency at the input of the vocal tract relative to the acoustic pressure at the input of the instru...

A methodological and preliminary study on the acoustic effect of a trumpet player's vocal tract.

A methodological study is presented to examine the acoustic role of the vocal tract in playing the trumpet. Preliminary results obtained for one professional player are also shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Images of the vocal tract with a resolution of 0.5 mm (2 mm in thickness) were recorded with magnetic resonance imaging to observe the tongue posture and estimate the vo...
